A British graduate student has earned a PhD in texting—an academic first, Discover magazine reports. Caroline Tagg’s doctorate, more specifically, is in the philosophy of texting communication. Tagg studied 11,000 texts from 235 people over three and a half years. Among the findings: The average text is 17.5 words, texters often include features of conversational spoken language like “oh,” “erm,” and “dunno" even though they add unneccessary keystrokes, and they use fewer abbreviations than you'd think.
“Not many people use abbreviations,” Tagg tells the said.

And she discovered from her 80,000 word thesis that there is more to texting that just abbreviations—something most people associate with texting.
“Actually, not many people use abbreviations,” she said. “People use playful manipulation and metaphors. It is a playful language. Not only are they quite creative, it is also quite expressive.”

four days , 17,000 people displaced, 990 hospitalized and about 460 killed(75 people the government says!! but we know thats a lie) and a twenty hour curfew, relative peace has returned to the town of jos as the curefew has relaxed to 5pm- 10am .Although this is only a semblance of peace as as residents of Bukuru complained of the presence of "fake soldiers" who have been going from house-to-house killing and maiming Christians and other natives. This is sad and most of all dishearten to see the nation of Nigeria slowly descend into a state of anarchy as every person sleeps with one eye open and the looming clouds of unrest and apprehension encompass every square inch of land between Lagos and Sokoto .

i hope to God the Vice President is willing to take the bull by the horn and prevent the occurrence retaliatory riots in coming days..... our prayers are with the families of the departed .

let it not be said that the only thing that brings Nigeria and Nigerians together is Soccer........

Joel Rathon had two missions Friday: bury his wife and save his son.It looked like he would be able to accomplish only one.His 3-year-old son, his mother-in-law and two other relatives remained trapped in the rubble of their basement home at 63 Avenue Christophe in central Port-au-Prince. Rathon said he heard his son's voice Friday morning, nearly three days after Tuesday's 7.0-magnitude earthquake collapsed his home, and was desperate to reach him."They shouldn't have to die this way," he said Friday afternoon, as he visited his wife's body at the Service de le Morgue Hueh.He pleaded for help to get his relatives out of the rubble."I don't have tools to do so many things," he says.It's a plea heard throughout Port-au-Prince this week. A day earlier, a man in another part of town had approached a CNN crew asking if they had a tractor or backhoe to dig out trapped people.At the morgue, Rathon gave a friend 3,000 Haitian gourdes (about $75) to buy a casket for his wife. He apologized that he could not "I don't have enough money," he said. "All my money is in my business."Rathon said he owned a printing and copy shop that employed six people. That is now gone.He's afraid the rest of his family will be gone soon, too.Rathon dug for 25 hours, he said, to get his wife out. He put her in his silver Toyota compact and raced to save her life."I went to the hospital but she died in my car 15 minutes later," he said.Friday afternoon she lay in the morgue parking lot among at least another 300 bodies. The morgue is full and bodies are laid on the ground in no particular pattern, swollen and stiffened and holding the pose in which they died.It is a horrendous scene made all the more horrible by the smell and the sorrow of family members who come to look for loved ones.

Another 10 or 12 bodies were piled on the sidewalk outside the hospital wall around the corner from the morgue.

Rathon returned to his house to show CNN where he heard the voice of his young son, Jotcharlls, just hours earlier. He says he's not angry or frustrated that he can't get help to dig them out. Those emotions would not solve anything.

But his words and the tone of his voice show he can't quite keep that resolve.

"I live in my car," he says with some agitation. "I lost my business. I lost my family. I lost everything."

Lasha Pataraia set the world record by pulling a MI8 helicopter 26 metres and 30 centimetres (28.4 yards and 11.8 inches). The 27-year-old set the record on his third attempt.

Yes, speaking of nausea, that would have been the feeling of any supporter of Nigeria who watched THE ''SUPER" EAGLES in the orange CAF nations cup. Where the wings of the super eagles Nigeria were clipped by the pharaohs of Egypt, in a devastating 3-1 loss after Nigeria played excitingly in the first 20mins (once again the eagles have done what they do best. Break the heart of Nigerians –they’ve broken mine so many time I’m not sure how much my poor heart can take- l need love, lol )

(two penalties ,three three headers-two world class) , em i was sorta on the side of Mali because of Stephen Keshi (ex Nigerian international cum coach) . the man of the march of clearly Seydou Keita who plays for FC BARCA, Spain, if the rest of the matches go like this, its going to be some 22 days of stuning soccer , I'd be posting the results from the competition on a sidebar to keep you posted ....i hope Nigeria can impress .....GO EAGLES !!!

Boy Gets Chopstick Stuck In Brain!

A young Chinese boy had to undergo brain surgery after a chopstick became stuck in his nose while playing.

Doctors say the 14-month old accidentally fell on it, piercing his nose and lodging inside his skull.

"It touched upon the deep area of his brain, four centimeters of the chopstick was inside his skull," Doctor Sun Wei toldCNN.

"The position of the chopstick was very, very lucky for him."

Zhao Guilu was in another room washing dishes when she heard her son, Li Jingchao, crying and came running.

The boy was lying on the ground wailing with the stick protruding from his head.

"I rushed in and saw him lying on the ground," Guilu said. "He couldn't stop crying and I noticed a chopstick stuck in his nose."

The boy's panicked mother rushed the child to a nearby medical clinic, but doctors feared it was too risky to remove the stick. A relative offered to drive the the boy and his parents hundreds of miles to Beijing instead.

"I thought at that time, it is all over, my boy will die," father Li Guanglai said.

"During the 10 hours of driving, I felt depressed, I could barely breathe. I looked at my boy and his right side was numb, he was paralyzed."

Neurosurgeons in Beijing feared removing the chopstick would rupture an artery and got the child ready for surgery. Yet when they pulled it, it came straight out easily.

Doctors say the boy had a lucky escape, and he could have been permanently paralyzed or died if the stick has been a few millimeters to either side, or further in.

"I never thought it would be this successful," his father said. "This hospital gave him a second life."

MYTHS ABOUT GAINING WEIGHT

So yesterday i talked about losing weight, today being world lekpa day (i invented it, so wot ?) i’m going to talk about how to gain weight ! in a healthy non self destructive way that is i.e does not involve chugging massive quantities of ice cream or yoghurt or even worse drinking obscene quantities of raw eggs before you go to bed every night. It should be noted that some people are underweight as a result of anorexia which is a severe eating disorder and can have life threatening implications –physiological help and therapy is what i recommend. Below is a picture of what anorexia is.(no,she is not poor! and the picture wasn't taken in Afghanistan )

So i’m going to structure things in the fashion of yesterday’s post for the sake of parity ; MYTH, FACT ,TIP. And on the left sidebar is still the BMI(body mass index) calculator which tells you if you are fit, under or over weight, just input your height and weight and it tells you.

# 1 MYTH : THE MORE PROTEIN YOU EAT THE MORE MUSCLE YOU WILL BUILD

FACT:- this is so false because adding protein to an already balanced diet would only lead the body to converting the excess protein you fed it to fat which gets stored . so yes you may push the needle of the scale further but in the long run you will hurt yourself because it may lead to other health problems like health failure and diabetes.

TIP: - in the bid to gain weight you have to watch what you eat because not all that makes you “fresh” is good for your health.

# 2 MYTH : YOU CAN NOT GAIN WEIGHT ON A VEGETARIAN DIET

FACT:- it is possible to gain weight on a vegetarian diet , bulk up and build lean muscle mass , but it’ll be marginally harder

TIP:- add nuts, whole grains, legumes and cereals to your diet.

FACT:- ok, i know you are thinking “boma, your own too much sef CYPRON WORKS WELL” I’m not a big fan of drugs really, because many drugs that help you gain weight also make you ,drowsy , lazy and sleepy for days on end . also they tend to tinker with your metabolism and all, there is also the psychological dependence(yes, crack is not the only addictive thing ) because when you get hooked on these drugs you can’t feel hungry unless you’ve popped one that morning! Resulting in ANOREXIA!!

TIP:- natural methods maybe harder but they are sure safer

# 4 MYTH: TO GAIN WEIGHT I SHOULD NOT GO TO THE GYM OR EXERCISE

FACT:- a good weight gain regimen is a careful balance between eating the right types of food and exercise, so you should watch your calorie intake, output and the types of food you take (FOOD IS NOT FOOD) . because building lean muscle mass is the healthy alternative to clogging your arteries with fats.

TIP:- when joining a gym, outline your reasons for joining to your instructor and he will come up with a program that fits your diet and helps you achieve your goals

#5 MYTH : Nutritional supplements are a must if you want to gain weight

FACT:- supplements like the word, are meant to add to the normal diet plan not replace em ! if you don’t take in enough protein through your normal diet, you may want to take a protein supplement. Apart from that, supplements are not necessary. There is no sense in over loading your system .

One of the most common new year resolutions is “This year i’m going to lose weight or whip myself back into shape” and yes most of people need the extra effort to burn of those extra pounds. The body operates at its optimum when one is in shape. Hmm two days ago my sister looked at me and said, hmm boma u r looking fat oh ! omo it didn’t stop me from finishing the drumstick that i was chewing on. But it got me thinking about eating smart! And the billions of people living with health problems as a direct result of being overweight.

If u check the sidebar on the right ,I have included a small application to help you know if you are in shape or over weight

So I’m going to arrange it in this order MYTH, FACT and maybe TIPS. As much as I can I’d try to keep it simple and understandable by keeping away from all the medical jargon et al

1. MYTH : YOU CAN LOSE WEIGHT WITH A PILL

FACT: We live in the computer age where all ones’ wants are only a button push away, people tend the same approach with losing weight (I know a bit about how drugs work and I know nothing good can come out of it). Last year $6 billion dollars was spent on fraudulent “diet “ pills and lets say you get luck and find one that works how’s HEART FAILURE for a side effect ! !

TIP: Weight loss is a result of carefully tailored lifestyle changes AND STICKING TO EM

2. MYTH: DIET COKE AIDS WEIGHT LOSS

FACT: There is no scientific evidence to show that they help you lose weight! Its all hype

3. MYTH: YOU HAVE TO JOIN A GYM TO LOSE WEIGHT

FACT: Recent research done at Cambridge university shows that 30 to 60 minutes per day of MODERATE physical activity is enough to balance ones food intake

TIP: The operative word is physical activity. Which does NOT include thinking or heavy reading in school nor does it include finishing one whole season of gossip girl in one day!

4. MYTH: Fasting or crash dieting makes you lose weight

FACT: This is only true in the short term but it ultimately can hinder weight loss as fasting leads to the removal of fat and lean muscle mass which leads to a drop in your metabolic rate the short of the long story is that when you stop fasting, it’ll take you less food than before to gain weight ! !

TIP: Use fasting as a way to show your dedication to GOD and not as a way to lose weight!

5. MYTH: FOOD EATING LATE AT NIGHT IS MORE FATTENING

FACT: Many diets tell you not to eat after a certain time in the evening. They say the body will store more fat because it is not burned off with any activity. Cambridge University suggests that when you eat is not important it’s the total calorie intake in a 24hr period that matters.

TIP: If u eat ,no breakfast and a large lunch and diner .omo bone your lack of breakfast just gets you grumpy in the morning!!

6. MYTH: NATURAL OR HERBAL WEIGHT LOSS PRODUCTS ARE SAFE AND EFFECTIVE

FACT: Because it is natural or herbal does not mean it’s safe. Things like ephedra are very toxic and potent and have numerous side effects! So be careful

TIP: Please talk with your pharmacist, doctor or nutritionist before you start of on the new magic sliming tea.

7. MYTH : CERTAIN FOODS, LIKE GRAPEFRUIT, LIME JUICE OR CABBAGE SOUP CAN BURN FAT

The holiday time is always a fun time , when families come together , friends meet old friends and make new ones, a general break from the hustle and STRESS of reality. but come January 1st we start to feel the stress of the grind that the new year brings(in this case 2010 A.D)

so i'm going to delicate a bit of time this month to help reduce and beat the stress and worrying- because worrying only leads to more worrying.
So here is a small 'clip out' i found on the web. it teaches a simple Breathing technique that helps your body ease up and helps you be more lucid and "less-hypertensive ".
(wait , before you say ahh , BOMA na jazz you wan start this new year ? just give it a try and see if it doesn't work )

Experts say that breathing has a direct relationship towards a person's emotional state. A person who is able to control his breathing can control his emotional state. There are two types of breathing:
1. Abdominal breathing - this means a person is breathing from his abdomen.
2. Intercostal breathing - this means a person is breathing from his chest.

A newborn baby is said to be breathing from his belly at the very first seconds of life. Unconsciously, at the early childhood humans switch from abdominal breathing to intercostals breathing. It can be said that humans switch from a stress-free mode of breathing to a stressed mode. Relying on to this fact, it can be concluded that abdominal breathing is the relaxation breathing and intercostals breathing is the opposite.

Going back to reducing stress and knowing the two types of breathing, a person must learn how to get back on abdominal breathing. Mastering this type of breathing will enable a person to relax, which is the start of stress reduction. Actually, abdominal breathing is used by yoga practitioners for relaxation.

To start breathing using the abdomen a person must try to breathe slowly.
Place the hands on the sides a few inches away from the armpits, in such a way that the palms can feel the ribs. Point the fingers to the front. Breathe in, attempting at the same time to push out the hands as far as possible with the ribs, that is, not in front of you but towards the sides. After a few attempts, you will feel the exact position.
You will notice clearly a greater resistance to the entrance of air than you did during the abdominal breathing, which allowed entry to the largest volume of air with a minimum of effort.
Despite the resistance a fairly large quantity of air will enter during thoracic breathing.
Breathe about twenty times from the ribs only
Slow and deep breathing using the abdomen can increase the flow of oxygen in the body promoting a calming effect. The extra oxygen in the blood helps release endorphins which are naturally occurring hormones that promote relaxation and re-energizes the body.

Doing this can be difficult at first but with constant practice a person will learn it in no time. Learning how to relax and control stress is very important. Uncontrolled stress may lead to more serious emotional and mental disorders and must be dealt with immediately.

Hayden a four (4) year old from Tennessee attempted to take presents from his neighbor’s house. It was reported that the door was unlocked and he walked right into the house and then stole five presents from under the neighbor’s Christmas tree. The kid even managed to get into some stolen girls dress before getting out of the house (as the little pilferer was later caught wearing a girls' brown dress) .The Hamilton County mom was petrified to find out later about her son’s deeds. His Mom (April Wright) is going through a divorce with Hayden’s dad, who is in prison (The apple doesn't fall far from the tree ,lol).

Police say the boy managed to break the child locks on the doors, open a beer he found from his grandfather's cooler, and then slip into his neighbor's house and steal five Christmas presents from underneath their tree. He was found at 1:45am wandering the streets wearing a little girl's brown dress (one of the presents he took) and drinking. He had to be taken to the hospital to be treated for alcohol consumption (omo this boy get JOS blood !)

Shoes:- Ah I didn’t know shoe was a whole dialect .thankfully

I had alewo to help me translate (I thought all of them were called heels and those without the heels, flats)

I heard stuff like gladiator, sandals (with heels) T-strap et al. Sha here r some really nice shoes.

Jewellery:- Bracelets, rings, anklets, earrings, necklaces, diamonds (yes diamond gets a category of its own) u see they are a woman best friend. A diamond is the crystallization of pure love. They can say anything from I love you mom to '' will u marry me? ''

Bags, hmm as long as it’s big and nah, just big, it’s cool and hip. LV is already making Ghana must go bags...the next trend is going to bags of rice!!(so u can stop throwing the bags away all that it’s missing is a Prada tag).

IPods, are nice they are fashionable, functional and can fit into one of em big bags no matter the size.

Its ten days to christamas , Sha i'm a bush nigerian guy who isnt used to giving and receiving christamas gifts -na only to dey chop fried rice and plenty chicken(there's also the small matter of andrews lever salt but i wont tell you what that is for -its sha not a seasoning) .

Any way for those of you used to 'gifting' and out of idea's of what to send your friends and loved ones and maybe me(i promise to be pleasantly surprised) this is my christamas wish list.

Its a simple list nothing elabaorate or over the top -like a hummer or buying an island.

1. I love watches ,can't have enough of em. A good watch is a good friend-reliable, dependable and always on time.

2. Ipod accessories yes, u have to have an ipod to use em (dey will not work with your nokia!)

iBass....They are top of the line external speakers

...Earphones: wireless ipod ear phone.....hmmmmmm (i drooled the first day i saw one and since then they've been the object of my day dreams ,lol )

3.Blazer:- Nothing in this world beats a well tailored,fitting,tapping blazer ,em except two.

4.perfumes:- i dont like strong fragrances that smell like weed nor people who over spray perfume (if it was made to be 'poured' on the body, it would have put in a jar like vaseline !)

Em... ok i'm not much of a perfume person therfore only a few fragrances have stolen my heart.

OBJ please forgive us....

Obj(obasanjo) is Many things....stubborn, determined, even myopic (but I never thought Nigeria would miss him). Obj came up with the idea of prolonging his stay in office(third term)and it got shot down.

So he said to himself I would punish this people(we Nigerians). I will give them yara'dua!!

Running a country of about 150million very stubborn people is no mean task even for the virile and determined not to talk of someone at the age of 58 with Churg Strauss Syndrome + Asthma + pericarditis = Wahalla

For the past 21 days ,Oga yaradua has not been able to honour 'us' with his presence in the country due to his extended hiatus in Saudi Arabia.

formerly , the average Nigeria's complain was that the country was moving too slowly but now, we are at a complete stand still -Choking in the stench of 'our' fumes.

Oga Yara’dua (or rather President Turai) please beg OBJ to forgive 'us' of our sins and allow Nigeria to have another chance at greatness . . . don’t run for office in 2010(better still quit now).

This is my humble prayer.

Nija will always be home....

Home is where the heart is they say, but i ask , na heart we go chop ?

The conditions in country are way beyond unbearable, stifling the creativity and innovativeness of the average individual , those who dare climb against this trend find it an arduous up ‘mountain’ struggle. But there is hope.

Somewhere at the top of ‘our’ seven point agenda is the issue of power generation -and 6000MW) but that's a story for another day .

You see, i live in one of the GRA-ish areas of the Kaduna metropolis and as at now (the time of typing this) there is no PHCN/NEPA and yes, i’m going to tell you why .

You see, somehow towards the end of the year(every year), PHCN shows up saying the community has to contribute the sum of N150,000 with the clam that the “oil” in the transformer has been stolen.

So this year the same sharp guys came in their blue overalls and whiteish-brownish pickup truck.

well this everyone decided to use the money to fuel their generators .
We just ‘celebrated ’ our THREE MONTHS of ‘‘lightlessness’’ HURRAY !!
